Black+Decker Cordless Hoovers: Dustbusters and Sticks
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.
Black+Decker invented the cordless handheld with the Dustbuster, and its handhelds are still sensible, cheap buys for crumbs, cars and quick spills. Its cordless sticks are budget options that work for light cleaning but don't match a Shark, Vax or Gtech for carpets. Buy Black+Decker for a handheld, and think carefully before buying one of its sticks.
Quick answer: For a kitchen or car handheld, a current 18V lithium Dustbuster (pet version if you have animals) is good value. For a whole-house cordless, Black+Decker's 18V sticks are only worth it at budget prices. Compare with our under-£100 picks first.

The Black+Decker cordless range at a glance
Black+Decker is owned by Stanley Black & Decker, which also owns DeWalt. Its UK household range changes every year or two, and the same Dustbuster name covers several generations and voltages. Check the listing for voltage, battery type (lithium-ion is standard now) and whether it charges by dock or cable.
| Line | Type | Best for | Typical price band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dustbuster (12V–18V lithium) | Handheld | Kitchen crumbs, worktops, quick spills | £40–£100 |
| Dustbuster Pet / pivot models | Handheld with motorised or rubber pet head | Sofas, pet beds, stairs | £60–£120 |
| reviva handheld | Handheld built with recycled plastic, replaceable battery | Light use, eco-minded buyers | £40–£70 |
| Car / 12V plug-in models | Car-socket handhelds | Cars without battery worries | £25–£50 |
| 18V stick (2-in-1 / 4-in-1) | Cordless stick with removable handheld | Small homes, hard floors | £80–£180 |
| 18V wet and dry handhelds | Handheld for liquid spills | Kitchen, utility, kids' spills | £50–£90 |
Price bands are typical, not live prices.
How the range works
- Voltage: higher voltage (18V vs 12V) generally means stronger suction and longer runtime. For anything beyond worktop crumbs, buy 16V–18V.
- Lithium vs older NiMH: current models use lithium-ion, which holds charge in storage. Avoid very old stock still using NiMH packs.
- Pivot / dynamic: a bending nozzle that reaches under furniture and into car footwells.
- Cyclonic filtration: most current Dustbusters spin dust around a filter cone to stop it clogging as quickly. Better filtration lasts longer between cleans.
- Stick formats: "2-in-1" has a handheld that lifts out. "4-in-1" usually adds extended-reach and car/upholstery modes.
Recommended Black+Decker models
Black+Decker 18V lithium Dustbuster (current generation)
This is the reason to buy Black+Decker. It's light, easy to grab and has a wide mouth for crumbs and cereal. A flip-out crevice tool and brush handle the car and sofa edges. It sits on a slim charger on the worktop and is ready when you need it. Compare it with Shark's WandVac and the Gtech Multi in our handheld roundup.
- Light and quick to use
- Wide mouth for crumbs
- Cheap
- Small bin
- Short runtime on max
Black+Decker Dustbuster Pet (18V)
The pet versions add a motorised or rubber-bristled head that pulls embedded hair from fabric much better than a plain nozzle. It's ideal for a dog's favourite armchair or the car boot. Our pet hair technique guide covers how to get the most from a handheld.
- Pet tool lifts hair from fabric
- Good for stairs
- Motorised head shortens runtime
- Hair needs clearing from the head
Black+Decker 12V car vacuum (plug-in)
If you only vacuum the car, a 12V socket-powered model means you never find a flat battery. The long cable reaches the boot of most family cars. Suction is modest but fine for grit and crumbs. See more in our car hoover guide.
- No battery to charge
- Cheap
- Engine should be running for long sessions
- Weaker than 18V battery models
Are Black+Decker sticks worth it?
For a small flat or a second hoover upstairs, an 18V 2-in-1 stick is acceptable. It's light and handy, with a handheld that lifts out. For carpet-heavy homes, though, the brush rolls and suction are some way behind a Vax ONEPWR or Gtech at similar or slightly higher prices, and the bins are small. Our best budget cordless hoover guide compares the realistic options.
Dustbuster vs a stick in handheld mode
If you already own a cordless stick, do you need a Dustbuster as well? Often yes. Pulling the handheld out of a stick means detaching the wand and usually holding a heavier unit with a narrower nozzle. A Dustbuster sitting on the worktop is quicker for kitchen crumbs, and you'll use it more. It also saves wear on your main hoover's battery. The exception is Shark's WandVac System and similar designs, where the handheld is already light and comfortable. Compare options in best handheld hoover.
Reliability, parts and warranty
Black+Decker usually offers a 2-year guarantee on household products, sometimes with extra cover on registration. Check the current terms. Replacement filters for popular Dustbusters are cheap and easy to find. The weak point of most handhelds is a built-in battery: when it fades after several years, the whole unit usually needs replacing. The reviva range was designed to make the battery replaceable, which is worth considering if longevity matters to you. Recycle old units properly. See how to dispose of a cordless hoover.
Where to buy
Argos, Amazon, Currys, B&Q, Robert Dyas and supermarkets all stock Dustbusters. Dustbusters are popular gifts, so prices are often lowest in November and early December.
FAQs
Is a Dustbuster strong enough for carpets?
For spot cleaning, yes. A pet model with a motorised head handles stair treads and rugs. It isn't a replacement for a floor hoover across a whole room.
Can I leave my Dustbuster on charge all the time?
Modern lithium Dustbusters are designed to sit on their charger, and their electronics stop charging when the battery is full. Keep them away from heat sources. Read more in can you leave a cordless hoover on charge.
Is Black+Decker the same company as DeWalt?
Both are owned by Stanley Black & Decker, but the batteries are different. DeWalt's 18V XR vacs are aimed at trades. See our DeWalt guide.
Can a Dustbuster pick up liquids?
Only the models sold as wet and dry. A standard Dustbuster can be damaged by liquid, so check the listing before using it on spills.
