What is a cordless hoover?

A cordless hoover is a vacuum cleaner powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery instead of a mains lead. Most are "stick" designs: a motor, bin and battery in a handheld unit that clips onto a long wand with a floor head, so the same machine cleans floors, stairs, sofas and the car. Battery technology and efficient digital motors mean the best cordless models now match or beat many corded hoovers on everyday pick-up.

TypeHow it worksBest forTypical runtime
Cordless stickHandheld motor unit + wand + floor head; converts to a handheldMost homes; whole-house cleaning20–60 min (less on max power)
HandheldCompact unit only, no wandSpills, stairs, car, sofa8–20 min
Cordless uprightSelf-standing body with the motor near the floor headLarge carpeted rooms, people who dislike stick weight in the hand30–50 min
Cordless cylinderBattery version of a traditional pull-along cylinderTradition-minded households, bagged convenience (e.g. Henry)Around 40–60 min with two batteries

How to choose a cordless hoover: the five things that matter

  1. Runtime in the mode you will actually use. Headline figures are usually measured on the lowest setting with a non-motorised tool. Expect roughly half on a carpet with the motorised head. See cordless hoover battery life explained.
  2. The floor head. A stiff-bristle motorised head digs into carpet; a soft roller is better on hard floors. Many good models include both, and anti-tangle designs save a weekly job with scissors if you have pets or long hair.
  3. Weight and balance. A stick weighing 2.5–3kg feels very different on stairs than on the floor. Top-heavy designs tire wrists in handheld mode.
  4. Bin and filtration. Bigger bins mean fewer trips to the outside bin; sealed systems with HEPA-grade filters matter for allergy sufferers. Read HEPA filters explained.
  5. Battery replacement and parts. Batteries degrade over 3–5 years. Click-in, swappable batteries are cheaper and easier to replace than screwed-in packs. See how long cordless hoovers last.

Cordless hoover FAQs

What is the best cordless hoover in the UK?

There is no single winner for every home. Dyson's Detect models lead on outright performance and filtration, while Shark's anti-hair-wrap models offer most of that capability for less money and suit pet owners. Our best cordless hoover guide ranks the current options by budget and need.

Is a cordless hoover as good as a corded one?

For daily cleaning in most homes, a good cordless stick now matches a mid-range corded hoover. Corded machines still win on unlimited runtime and sustained deep-carpet cleaning, which matters in large, fully carpeted houses.

How long does a cordless hoover battery last?

Per charge, expect 20–60 minutes depending on model and power mode. Over its life, a lithium-ion battery typically keeps useful capacity for 3–5 years of regular use before runtime drops noticeably.

How much should I spend on a cordless hoover?

Around £150–£300 buys a capable, well-supported stick from a major brand. Below £100 expect shorter runtimes and weaker carpet cleaning; above £400 you pay for extra suction, sensors, larger batteries and premium filtration.

Shark or Dyson: which cordless hoover is better?

Dyson generally offers stronger suction, better filtration and more advanced sensors; Shark offers excellent anti-tangle brush rolls, flexible wands and better value. See our Shark vs Dyson comparison for model-by-model matches.
