Dyson Cordless Hoovers: The UK Range Explained (2026)

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The Dyson cordless hoover most UK buyers should get is the V15 Detect, which is regularly discounted and still matches newer models on most floors. On a budget, a V8 or V11 does the basics very well; if money is no object, the Gen5detect remains the strongest all-rounder. Dyson's range spans roughly £200 to over £700, and the names tell you less than you would expect.

Quick answer: Best overall value: Dyson V15 Detect. Best lightweight: V12 Detect Slim. Best cheap Dyson: V8 (or a V11 in a sale, see our V11 review). Best no-compromise: Gen5detect. Newer models such as the V16 Piston Animal are impressive but cost a lot more for modest real-world gains.

The Dyson cordless range at a glance

Dyson sells some models directly and others mainly through Currys, Argos, John Lewis, AO and Amazon, often under retailer-specific names. This table covers the main lines you will find in the UK in late 2026. Price bands are typical, not live prices.

Dyson also sells handheld-only and wet-cleaning models (the Submarine wet roller head and the separate WashG1). For handhelds, see our best handheld hoover guide; for wet cleaning, see best cordless wet and dry hoover.

How Dyson naming works

Dyson names have two parts: the platform (V8, V11, V15, Gen5) and the bundle (Origin, Advanced, Absolute, Animal, Total Clean, Submarine). The platform decides the motor, battery, bin and electronics. The bundle decides which floorheads and tools come in the box.

  • Origin is the cheapest bundle, often with a single cleaner head and fewer tools. Fine if you have one main floor type.
  • Advanced usually means a different head set or a lower-spec battery on some platforms. Check the runtime; on some V11 versions the Advanced has a shorter claimed runtime than the Absolute.
  • Absolute is the full kit: typically both a carpet head and the Fluffy soft roller for hard floors, plus more tools. Usually the best-value bundle per pound if you have mixed floors.
  • Submarine adds a wet roller head that mops hard floors. Useful in kitchens; unnecessary in carpeted homes.
  • Retailer names such as "Total Clean", "Extra" or store-exclusive colourways are mostly the same platform with different tools. Compare the tool list, not the name.

The higher the number, the newer the platform, but not always the better buy. A V15 Detect often costs little more than a V12 in sales and does more, while the Gen5detect costs considerably more for gains you will mostly notice in large, carpet-heavy homes. Our head-to-heads explain the differences: V8 vs V11, V11 vs V15, V12 vs V15 and V15 vs Gen5detect.

Dyson technology explained

Laser and green light illumination

V12 Detect Slim, V15 Detect and Gen5detect use a light on the Fluffy head (laser on the V12 and V15, a wider green illumination on later heads) that makes fine dust visible on hard floors. It is genuinely useful on laminate and tiles because you can see what you are missing; it does nothing on carpet.

Particle sensor and LCD screen

Detect models count and size particles as they pass through the bin and show the results on an LCD screen. In auto mode, the hoover raises power when it detects more dust. The counts are more interesting than essential, but auto mode does stretch battery life in practice. V11 also has an LCD that shows remaining runtime in minutes, which is far more useful than a three-bar indicator.

Anti-tangle heads and the Hair Screw tool

Older Dyson heads tangle long hair badly. Newer heads use conical or comb-assisted designs to push hair off the end of the roller, and the Hair Screw tool (included with many V11, V15 and Gen5 bundles) is a small conical mini-motor head for sofas and stairs. It works well on pet hair. See best cordless hoover for long hair for how this compares with Shark.

Filtration

All current Dyson sticks use whole-machine filtration, with Dyson claiming the vast majority of fine particles are captured. The Gen5detect uses a fully sealed HEPA system, which is the reason many allergy sufferers choose it. If you have asthma or dust allergies, see our allergy guide and our explainer on HEPA filters.

Triggers, buttons and bins

V8 through to the V15 and V12 use a trigger you must hold while cleaning. The Gen5detect replaced the trigger with a power button, as do some newer models. Button control is easier on the hand over a long clean. Bins on most models empty with a push-down "point and shoot" action; the V16 adds a compacting bin to fit more in.

Which Dyson cordless hoover should you buy?

Best Dyson for most homes

Dyson V15 Detect Absolute

The sweet spot of the range. It has the laser Fluffy head for hard floors, a Digital Motorbar head with anti-tangle comb for carpets, the particle sensor with auto mode, an LCD runtime readout and a removable click-in battery. Since newer models arrived it is frequently discounted, often to a price that makes the V12 and V11 look poor value. Full detail in our V15 Detect review.

  • Excellent on every floor type
  • Auto mode and screen manage battery well
  • Strong filtration
  • Around 3kg: heavy for stairs and overhead
  • Trigger must be held

Best no-compromise Dyson

Dyson Gen5detect

The Gen5detect is still regarded by independent reviewers as one of the most powerful cordless sticks you can buy, with a sealed HEPA system, a power button instead of a trigger, and a longer claimed runtime than the V15. It makes most sense in large or carpet-heavy homes and for allergy sufferers. In smaller homes, you would struggle to notice the difference over a V15. See our Gen5detect review.

  • Top-tier suction and runtime
  • Fully sealed HEPA filtration
  • Button rather than trigger
  • Expensive even in sales
  • Heavy, around 3.5kg

Best lightweight Dyson

Dyson V12 Detect Slim

A smaller, lighter take on the Detect formula. It keeps the laser head, particle sensor and screen, and adds a smaller anti-tangle carpet head, but with a smaller bin and less outright suction than the V15. It suits flats, hard-floored homes and anyone who finds full-size sticks too heavy. Our V12 review explains the trade-offs.

  • Noticeably lighter in the hand
  • Laser head is ideal for hard floors
  • Small bin
  • Less suited to deep-pile carpet

Best cheap Dyson

Dyson V8 Absolute

The V8 is old but still relevant. It cleans well enough for flats and small houses, parts are everywhere and prices are low. Its limitations are real: a fixed battery on older versions, a small bin, a basic three-light battery indicator and heads that tangle more than newer designs. Our V8 review covers whether it is still worth it, and V8 vs V11 shows what the extra money buys.

  • Cheapest way into a Dyson
  • Light and well balanced
  • Shorter runtime on carpet
  • Older tech and smaller bin

What about the V10 and V11? The V10 has largely disappeared from new stock and is now mainly a refurbished or second-hand buy; our V10 review covers what to check. The V11 is a strong mid-range option with its runtime screen and good carpet performance, but its price often sits close to a discounted V15, in which case we would stretch to the V15. For a full ranked list, see the best Dyson cordless hoover.

Dyson vs other brands

Shark is Dyson's closest rival and often wins on value, bendable wands and hair handling; Dyson tends to win on filtration, runtime management and top-end power (Shark vs Dyson). The Shark Stratos vs Dyson V15 page covers the most common head-to-head. Against Samsung's Bespoke Jet, the V15 is lighter and cheaper but lacks the clean station (Bespoke Jet vs V15). Miele, Bosch, Gtech and Vax each offer a different trade-off: see Miele vs Dyson, Bosch vs Dyson, Gtech vs Dyson and Dyson vs Vax.

Batteries and runtime

Dyson claims up to around 40 minutes for the V8, up to an hour for the V11 and V15, and up to about 70 minutes for the Gen5detect and V16. These figures are achieved in eco mode with a non-motorised tool. With the motorised floorhead on carpet in auto or medium mode, plan on roughly 25–45 minutes for a V15, and expect boost to drain any Dyson in five to eight minutes.

From the V11 onwards (and on later V8 versions) the battery clicks in and out, so you can buy a spare. On older V8 and V10 models the battery is screwed in but still replaceable at home with a screwdriver. Our battery replacement guide covers genuine versus third-party options.

Reliability, parts and warranty

Dyson's UK cordless guarantee has typically been two years parts and labour, including the battery, and Dyson asks you to register the machine. Check the exact terms when you buy, especially for refurbished stock, which usually carries a shorter guarantee. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply separately (see our warranty guide).

Parts support is one of Dyson's strengths: filters, batteries, heads and tools for older models remain widely available from Dyson and third parties. The issues owners most commonly report are battery fade after several years, pulsing on and off (almost always a blockage or clogged filter), and brush bars that stop spinning. Our Dyson troubleshooting guide covers each, including error messages on LCD models.

Watch out: Dyson heads and tools from different generations do not all fit each other. V7, V8, V10 and V11 use one click-fit standard, while V12 and Gen5 use others. Check compatibility before buying spare tools or a second-hand head.

Where to buy a Dyson cordless hoover

Dyson sells directly through its UK site, which often has exclusive bundles and occasionally the lowest price on newer models. Currys, Argos, John Lewis, AO and Amazon carry most of the range, and older models are frequently cheapest at retailers. Dyson's own outlet and refurbished channels can be excellent value for V8, V11 and V15 models. Our Dyson sale guide explains when prices typically drop and what counts as a good price for each model, and the refurbished guide covers buying used safely.

Is a Dyson worth the money?

For many households, yes, but not always at full price. Dyson's advantages are real: strong filtration, accurate runtime screens on most models, auto modes that conserve battery and excellent parts support. Their weaknesses are weight on the bigger models, trigger designs on most of the range, and prices that only make sense when discounted. If you mainly have hard floors in a small flat, a V12 or a cheaper rival may serve you just as well. FAQs

What is the newest Dyson cordless hoover in the UK?

Dyson's newer launches include the V16 Piston Animal and the ultra-slim PencilVac, alongside the Gen5detect, which remains its flagship stick for many buyers. Dyson refreshes its range most autumns, so check Dyson's UK site for the very latest launches before you buy.

Which Dyson is best for pet hair?

The V15 Detect and Gen5detect are the strongest choices, thanks to their anti-tangle carpet heads, the Hair Screw tool and good filtration. A V11 is a cheaper alternative that still handles pet hair well on carpets.

Why is my Dyson pulsing on and off?

Pulsing is the machine protecting itself from a blockage or a clogged filter. Wash and fully dry the filter, check the wand, head and bin inlet for blockages, and check the battery is charged. If it continues, see our troubleshooting guide.

Can I use a V15 head on a V11?

Generally yes. The V15's heads use the same click-fit connection as the V11, V10 and V8, though features such as auto mode or the laser depend on the body. V12 and Gen5 heads use different fittings and are not interchangeable with older models.

Is it worth buying an older Dyson like the V8 in 2026?

Yes, if you have a small home and buy it at a low price. It still cleans well, and parts are cheap and plentiful. If your home is larger or mostly carpet, a discounted V11 or V15 is a better long-term buy.
