Dyson V10 Review: Is a Used or Refurbished V10 Worth It?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The Dyson V10 is no longer part of Dyson's main UK line-up, so in 2026 you'll mostly find it refurbished, second-hand or as leftover stock. It remains a strong cordless hoover – bigger bin and longer runtime than the V8, lighter than the V11 – but it is only a good buy if the price reflects its age and the battery has been checked or replaced.

Quick answer: A V10 is worth buying if you can get a refurbished unit with a warranty (ideally Dyson's own outlet or a reputable refurbisher) for noticeably less than a new V8 or V11. Skip private used listings with unknown battery history unless the price leaves room for a new battery, and skip it entirely if you want a screen, auto mode or a click-in spare battery.

Why the V10 was discontinued, and what that means for you

Dyson gradually replaced the V10 with the V11, V12 Detect Slim and V15 Detect, which add an LCD screen, click-in batteries and (on most models) automatic suction adjustment. The V10 wasn't withdrawn because of a fault; it simply sat awkwardly between the cheap V8 and the better-equipped V11.

The practical consequences are positive for buyers. Parts – batteries, filters, wands, brush bars – are still widely sold by Dyson and third parties, and the V10 shares its floor heads and tools with the V11 and V15 via Dyson's click-on fitting. You can upgrade a V10 with a Fluffy head or newer tools without fuss.

Design and handling

The V10 introduced Dyson's "in-line" layout, with the cyclone and bin running along the same axis as the wand. That makes it better balanced than the V8 and slightly easier to aim into corners. It is still top-heavy when lifted overhead, but at under 2.7kg it is comfortably lighter than a V11 or V15.

It keeps the trigger: the motor runs only while you hold it. A slider on the back gives three power levels, which is more control than the V8's two. There's no screen, just a battery light strip.

Cleaning performance by floor type

Hard floors

With the Fluffy soft roller (included on V10 Absolute kits), the V10 is excellent on laminate, wood and tile, clearing fine dust and larger debris in one pass.

Carpets

The V10's extra suction over the V8 is noticeable on carpets. Reviews from independent testers at the time placed it close to the V11 for everyday carpet cleaning, with the V11 pulling ahead on deep pile thanks to its High Torque head and stronger motor. On thick carpet you'll still use the middle or highest setting, which cuts runtime substantially.

Pet hair

The original Direct Drive head can wrap with long hair. If you plan to use a V10 in a pet home, consider fitting a later anti-tangle head or Motorbar-style head; check compatibility before buying, as some newer heads need the later wand connection.

Battery and charging

When new, the V10 managed close to its 60-minute claim only on the lowest setting with a non-motorised tool. With the motorised head on low, expect roughly 35–45 minutes; on the middle setting, around 20–25; on boost, around 5–8 minutes.

The key issue for a 2026 purchase is battery age. Any V10 is now at least several years old, and batteries lose capacity with every cycle. A V10 battery that delivers only 10–15 minutes on low isn't faulty – it's worn out. The battery is held by screws, so replacement is easy; budget for one unless the seller has fitted a new cell. See our battery replacement guide for genuine vs third-party options and safety advice.

Bin, filtration and maintenance

The 0.76-litre bin is about 40% larger than the V8's and is emptied with a downward "point and shoot" push. It's one of the cleaner Dyson emptying designs, though hair can still catch on the shroud.

The V10 has a single washable filter at the top of the cyclone, which Dyson recommends rinsing in cold water roughly monthly. A blocked filter is the most common cause of the pulsing on-off behaviour V10 owners report – our Dyson troubleshooting guide walks through it.

Buying a used or refurbished V10: checklist

  1. Ask for a runtime figure. A good battery should still run 25+ minutes on the lowest setting with the motorised head. Anything far below that means you'll need a new battery soon.
  2. Check for pulsing. If it cuts in and out, it may be a blocked filter (fixable) or a failing battery or motor (costly).
  3. Inspect the brush bar end caps and bearings. Grinding or squeaking points to worn parts.
  4. Confirm the charger and wall dock are included. Third-party chargers vary in quality.
  5. Prefer a warranty. Dyson's outlet and established refurbishers typically offer cover; private sales on Facebook Marketplace or eBay usually don't.
  6. Price it honestly. If a used V10 plus a new battery costs about the same as a new V8 on sale, the new V8 may be the simpler option.

V10 variants

  • V10 Absolute – Direct Drive head plus Fluffy soft roller, mini motorised tool and small tools. The most versatile used buy.
  • V10 Animal – Direct Drive head and mini motorised tool; no Fluffy.
  • V10 Motorhead / Cyclone V10 – simpler kits with fewer tools, found mainly as used or retailer stock.

On paper the V10 is the better hoover than a V8. In practice, a new V8 comes with a fresh battery and full warranty, which often outweighs the V10's advantages unless the refurbished V10 is clearly cheaper.

Pros and cons

  • Better balanced and lighter than the V11 and V15
  • Larger 0.76L bin and longer runtime than the V8
  • Shares heads and tools with newer Dysons
  • Often very cheap refurbished
  • No longer in Dyson's main range; new stock is scarce
  • Any example is now old enough to need a battery soon
  • Trigger power, no screen, no auto mode
  • Original head can tangle with long hair

Alternatives to the Dyson V10

  • Dyson V8 – still sold new, with a full warranty and a fresh battery, at a price often close to a refurbished V10.
  • Dyson V11 – a screen, click-in battery and stronger carpet performance. Compare them in V8 vs V11.
  • Shark Anti Hair Wrap Cordless – new, with a removable battery and better hair handling for similar money.

FAQs

Can I still buy a new Dyson V10?

Occasionally, as leftover retailer stock or under a different kit name, but it is not part of Dyson's main UK range. Most V10s on sale now are refurbished or used.

Will a V11 or V15 battery fit a V10?

No. The V11 and V15 use click-in batteries with a different fitting. Buy a battery listed specifically for the V10 (the SV12 platform).

Do V11 floor heads fit the V10?

Dyson's click-on wand fitting is shared from the V7 to the V15, so most heads and tools fit physically. Some heads that rely on data from the machine, such as the V15's laser and auto-adjust features, won't work fully on a V10.

What's a fair price for a used Dyson V10?

It depends on battery health and included tools. As a rule, a used V10 with an unknown battery should cost noticeably less than a refurbished one with warranty, leaving room for a replacement battery.
