Refurbished Cordless Hoovers: How to Buy Safely
A refurbished cordless hoover can save a big chunk of the new price, especially on Dyson and Shark models, but the value depends almost entirely on two things: who refurbished it and the health of the battery. Buy from the manufacturer's own refurbished store or a reputable retailer with a clear warranty, check the battery on arrival, and avoid anonymous listings with vague grading.
Quick answer: The safest route is the brand's official refurbished stock (Dyson and Shark both sell refurbished machines in the UK), followed by major retailers' graded or renewed programmes. Expect a shorter warranty than new. Before paying, compare the refurb price with the current new price of the same model or its successor; discounts on new stock are often deep enough to make a refurb poor value.

Refurbished, used, graded: what the labels mean
| Label | What it usually means | Typical warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer refurbished | Returned or ex-display unit inspected and repaired by the brand, often with new parts and a new battery where needed | Usually shorter than new (often around 6–12 months); check |
| Retailer renewed or refurbished | Inspected by a third-party refurbisher to the retailer's standard | Varies; often 90 days to 12 months |
| Graded (A/B/C) or open box | Returned or damaged packaging; may be cosmetically marked | Often full or near-full warranty if new |
| Used / pre-owned | Sold as seen, often privately | None beyond basic rights, sometimes none at all |
Warranty lengths change, so always read the terms on the product page at the time you buy. Our warranty guide explains brand warranties and how they sit alongside your legal rights.
Where to buy refurbished in the UK
Dyson Outlet and official refurbished
Dyson sells refurbished machines directly, typically including older V-series models such as the V8, V11 and V15. These are the most trustworthy refurbs because Dyson inspects and repairs them with genuine parts. The saving versus a new current model can be significant, but compare against new prices in Dyson's own sales and at retailers. Our Dyson cordless hoover sale guide sets out what counts as a good price per model.
Shark refurbished
Shark sells refurbished machines in the UK, including through its own channels and official marketplace stores. Check the seller is genuinely Shark or an authorised partner. Bundle codes matter: the same model can come with different tools, so compare like for like. See Shark cordless hoover sale for how Shark's bundles and suffixes work.
Retailer programmes
Amazon Renewed, eBay's refurbished programme and some high-street retailers' clearance or open-box sections sell refurbished hoovers. Quality is more variable: some units are near-new, others are cosmetically worn with an older battery. Read the grading definitions and the seller's warranty, and favour sellers with a clear returns process.
Private sales
Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree can be cheap, but you get no warranty and limited legal protection. If you do buy privately, test the machine in person, ideally on carpet with the main floorhead, for several minutes.
Your rights when buying refurbished
When you buy from a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies to refurbished goods too: they must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, taking into account that they are refurbished and the price paid. You have a 30-day short-term right to reject faulty goods, and online purchases also come with a 14-day cancellation period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations.
Private sellers only need to describe the item accurately, so your protection is much weaker. This is the main reason to pay slightly more for a refurb from a business.
Battery health checks
The battery is the part most likely to have worn on a used cordless, and it is the most expensive single part to replace. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age and charge cycles, and a worn pack can show a full charge but still cut out after a few minutes.
- Ask whether the battery is new or tested. Manufacturer refurbs often fit a new battery or test it to a minimum capacity; third-party listings rarely say.
- Charge fully, then run a timed test. On arrival, charge to full and run the machine in its lowest mode with a non-motorised tool. Compare with the model's claimed runtime; a big shortfall (for example, half) suggests a worn battery.
- Repeat in normal mode with the floorhead. This shows real-world performance. Note any sudden cut-outs or pulsing.
- Look for physical damage. A swollen, cracked or very hot battery is a safety issue; stop using it and return it.
- Check it charges normally. Charging lights should behave as the manual describes, and the charger should be genuine.
Watch out: Avoid refurbs with unbranded "compatible" batteries or chargers unless clearly disclosed and priced accordingly. Cheap packs can lack proper protection circuits. Our battery replacement guide covers genuine vs third-party options and safety.
Other checks on arrival
- Brush bar: spins freely, no damaged bristles or noisy bearings. See how to clean a hoover brush roll.
- Bin and cyclone: clean, with no cracks; seals intact.
- Filters: clean or new. A dirty filter suggests a light-touch refurb.
- Trigger or power button: works without intermittent cut-outs.
- Tools and charger: all listed items present.
- Serial number: matches the paperwork, useful for warranty registration.
If suction seems weak, run through our losing suction checklist before deciding it is faulty, as blockages are common after storage.
Is refurbished good value?
It depends on the model and the moment. Older models in their last year on sale are often discounted heavily new, sometimes close to refurbished prices. In that case, new is better value because of the full warranty and fresh battery.
Refurbished shines when a still-relevant model is no longer sold new, or when the saving on a premium model is large. Older Dysons, for example, remain capable cleaners but are increasingly only available refurbished; see our Dyson V10 review for buying-used advice on that model.

Disposing of your old hoover
If the refurb replaces an old machine, do not put it in household waste. Cordless hoovers and their batteries must be recycled. See how to dispose of a cordless hoover for UK take-back options.
FAQs
Do refurbished Dysons come with a new battery?
Not always. Manufacturer refurbs replace parts as needed and test the battery, but not every unit gets a new one. Ask before buying, and run a timed test on arrival.
How much cheaper is a refurbished cordless hoover?
Savings vary by model and seller. Compare against the current new price, as sales on new stock often narrow the gap. Never assume a refurb is the cheapest option.
Can I register a refurbished hoover for warranty?
Manufacturer refurbs usually come with their own warranty, which you may need to register. Third-party refurbs are covered by the seller's warranty instead.
Is it safe to buy a used cordless hoover?
Generally yes from a reputable seller, but check the battery for swelling or damage and make sure the charger is genuine. Avoid machines with signs of water damage or burning smells.
