Dyson V12 Detect Slim Review: The Lightweight Dyson to Buy?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the best Dyson for flats and smaller homes with mostly hard floors. It weighs only around 2.2kg, yet brings the laser-lit Fluffy head, a particle sensor that adjusts suction, an LCD screen and a click-in battery. The catch is a tiny 0.35-litre bin and less muscle than the V15 on thick carpet.

Quick answer: Buy the V12 Detect Slim if weight and manoeuvrability matter most – flats, stairs, older users, or anyone who hoovers little and often. Skip it if you have a large carpeted house or a heavily shedding dog: you'll be emptying the bin constantly and the V15 Detect or V11 will clean deep pile better.

Design and handling

The V12 is a shrunken V15. The motor, cyclones and bin are all slimmer, and the wand is narrower, so the whole machine feels nimble in a way the V11 and V15 don't. At around 2.2kg it is light enough to lift to skirting boards, curtain rails and car interiors without wrist strain – one reason it appears in our best lightweight cordless hoover guide.

The LCD screen shows mode, runtime remaining and a live bar chart of particles counted by size. That particle display is partly novelty, but it does encourage you to keep going over a dusty patch until the count drops. Power is controlled by a trigger on most UK kits.

Cleaning performance by floor type

Hard floors

The Laser Slim Fluffy head is the reason to buy a V12. A green light projected at floor level shows fine dust and hair you can't normally see on laminate, wood or tiles. It doesn't make the hoover pick up more, but it helps you see what you've missed. The soft roller also handles larger debris without scattering it. On hard floors the V12 is among the best cordless sticks available.

Carpets

Kits that include the Motorbar head handle short- and medium-pile carpet and rugs well, with Auto mode raising suction when the sensor detects more dust. On thick or deep-pile carpet it extracts less than the V11 and V15, and you'll lean on Boost, which drains the battery quickly. It's fine as a top-up hoover in a carpeted house but not ideal as the only one.

Pet hair and long hair

The Motorbar head's de-tangling vanes reduce hair wrap, and many kits include the Hair Screw tool for upholstery and pet beds. Hair handling is good; the limiting factor is the bin, which fills fast with fur.

Battery and charging

Dyson's up-to-60-minute claim applies to Eco mode with a non-motorised tool. With the Fluffy head in Eco, owners typically report 40–50 minutes; in Auto on mixed floors, roughly 20–35 minutes depending on how dusty the floor is; in Boost, a handful of minutes. For a flat or small house that is ample.

The battery clicks in and out, so a spare is a simple way to extend runtime. A full charge takes around four hours. See our cordless hoover battery life guide for how runtime declines over the years.

Bin, filtration and maintenance

The 0.35-litre bin is less than half the size of the V15's. In a small flat with no pets you'll empty it once per clean; in a pet home, expect to empty it mid-clean. The emptying action is a push-down plunger that also wipes the shroud, which helps with hair.

Dyson claims sealed whole-machine filtration capturing 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns, which suits allergy sufferers. The washable filter should be rinsed roughly monthly and dried thoroughly. Read our HEPA filters explained guide for what the claim does and doesn't mean.

Tools and UK variants

  • V12 Detect Slim (standard kits) – usually the Laser Slim Fluffy head plus basic tools. Best for hard-floor homes.
  • V12 Detect Slim Absolute – adds the Motorbar head and the Hair Screw tool. The best all-rounder kit if you have rugs or carpeted bedrooms.
  • V12s Detect Slim Submarine – adds a wet roller head for mopping hard floors. Useful for kitchens; compare with dedicated machines in our wet and dry cordless hoover guide.

Kit contents vary by retailer, so compare head lists rather than names.

Who the V12 Detect Slim suits best

Flats and small houses. If your home is mostly laminate, wood or tiles with a rug or two, the V12 covers it comfortably on one charge and stores easily on its wall dock.

Little-and-often cleaners. Because it's light, people tend to grab it more often. Frequent short cleans also suit the small bin.

Anyone who finds full-size sticks heavy. Older users, people with wrist or shoulder problems and anyone cleaning a lot of stairs will appreciate the weight saving over a V11 or V15. See our best cordless hoover for elderly users for other light options.

Who should look elsewhere: large carpeted homes, multi-pet households and anyone who hates emptying bins. In those cases the bigger-bin V15 or Shark Stratos is a better match.

The practical difference is simple: the V12 is easier to live with in a small home, the V15 is better in a large or carpet-heavy one. Our V12 vs V15 comparison goes round by round.

Long-term ownership

Like other Dysons, the V12 has a washable filter and no bags, so running costs are mainly the eventual battery replacement. The click-in battery makes that a quick swap. Parts are model-specific in places because of the slimmer wand and heads, so buy spares listed for the V12 rather than assuming V15 parts fit. Our Dyson troubleshooting guide covers common error messages and pulsing.

Pros and cons

  • Very light and easy to manoeuvre for a full-size Dyson
  • Laser head reveals dust on hard floors
  • Auto mode, LCD screen and click-in battery
  • Strong filtration claims for allergy sufferers
  • Tiny 0.35L bin
  • Weaker than V11/V15 on deep-pile carpet
  • Pricey for its suction level
  • Trigger must be held on most kits

Alternatives to the V12 Detect Slim

  • Dyson V15 Detect – heavier but stronger, with double the bin. See V12 vs V15.
  • Dyson V8 – similar weight, much cheaper, no screen or laser.
  • Shark Detect Pro – a lighter-weight Shark with dirt sensing and a lower typical price.
  • Shark WandVac – if you mainly need quick spot cleans rather than whole-floor hoovering.

FAQs

Is the V12 Detect Slim as powerful as the V15?

No. Dyson rates the V12 at around 150 air watts against roughly 230 or more for the V15. On hard floors the difference is hard to notice; on deep-pile carpet the V15 extracts more embedded dust.

Does the V12 laser work on carpet?

The laser is on the Fluffy head, which is designed for hard floors. It's of little use on carpet, where the Motorbar head is the right choice.

Do V15 tools fit the V12 Detect Slim?

Not all of them. The V12 uses a slimmer wand and its own slimmer heads. Many small tools are compatible, but check before buying V15 floor heads for a V12.

Is the V12 good for stairs?

Yes. Its low weight makes it one of the easier Dysons to use on stairs in handheld mode, though you may need to empty the small bin on a carpeted staircase.
