Shark Detect Pro Cordless Review: Lighter, Smarter, Smaller Bin
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.
The Shark Detect Pro Cordless (IW1511UK) is a lighter, more compact Shark that adjusts suction automatically when it senses dirt, edges or a change of floor type. It's a good fit for flats and small homes with mixed floors, and costs less than Dyson's V12 Detect Slim. The trade-off is a small 0.4-litre bin and a stick that isn't as strong on deep carpet as Shark's heavier Stratos and PowerDetect.
Quick answer: Buy the Detect Pro if you want a Shark that's easier to lift and carry, with smart suction and a removable battery, for a smaller home. Skip it if you have a big carpeted house or several pets: the bin is small and the PowerDetect or Stratos clean thick carpet better.

Design and handling
The Detect Pro drops the Flexology bendy wand used on many Shark sticks in favour of a slimmer straight design. The result is noticeably lighter than the Stratos or PowerDetect and easier to lift up stairs or carry between floors. It still uses a power button rather than a Dyson-style trigger.
Headlights on the floor head illuminate dust under furniture and in dim hallways, while the slimmer pod makes the handheld unit easier to use on sofas, shelves and car seats than bulkier Sharks.
How the Detect features work
- Dirt Detect – a sensor raises suction when it detects more debris, then drops back to save battery.
- Edge Detect – boosts suction and brush activity at skirting boards and edges, where dust gathers.
- Floor Detect – adjusts brush roll speed and suction between carpet and hard floor.
These are similar in purpose to Dyson's Auto mode. They don't make the hoover more powerful than its motor allows, but they save battery on clean floors and save you manually switching modes.
Cleaning performance by floor type
Hard floors
Very good. The head handles crumbs and fine dust on laminate, wood and tiles, and Edge Detect helps along skirting boards. It's comparable with similarly priced rivals.
Carpets
Good on short and medium pile for everyday cleans. On thick or deep-pile carpet, independent reviews and owner feedback suggest it extracts less embedded dust than the Stratos, PowerDetect or Dyson V11/V15. See best cordless hoover for carpets if that's your main floor.
Pet and long hair
The Anti Hair Wrap brush roll largely prevents tangling. The smaller bin is the real limit in pet homes.
Battery and charging
Shark quotes up to 60 minutes for the UK model (the US version is rated lower), measured in Eco with a non-motorised tool. With the floor head and Detect features active, expect roughly 25–40 minutes depending on floors and dirt levels; less in Boost. The battery is removable, so you can charge it away from the hoover or buy a spare.
Bin, filtration and maintenance
At around 0.4 litres, the bin is roughly half that of a Stratos or Dyson V11. In a small flat that's fine; in a pet home you'll empty it mid-clean. The Auto-Empty System versions solve this with a base station that sucks the bin out into a larger bagless container each time you dock, a good option if bin-emptying dust bothers your allergies – see best self-emptying cordless hoover.
The filters are washable; rinse monthly and dry thoroughly. Check the brush roll ends for threads occasionally.
Variants
- IW1511UK – the standalone stick with crevice and dusting tools.
- Detect Pro Auto-Empty System – the same stick plus an auto-empty dock. Worth it if you hate emptying a small bin; check retailer listings for the exact code.
- Pet or retailer kits – may add a motorised pet tool or second battery.
Who should buy the Detect Pro
Flats and smaller homes. Lighter weight and automatic suction make quick, frequent cleans easy, and the small bin is less of a problem in a smaller space.
People who carry their hoover between floors. At roughly 2.8kg it's noticeably easier on stairs than a Stratos or PowerDetect.
Allergy sufferers (Auto-Empty version). Emptying a small bin into the kitchen bin is where most dust escapes; a dock removes that step.
Who should skip it: large carpeted homes, multi-pet households without the dock, and anyone who wants Shark's bendable wand.

Running costs and ownership
Running costs are low: no bags and washable filters. The removable battery is the main long-term replacement part. Shark UK typically offers an extended guarantee on registration with shorter battery cover – check your model's terms. If it stops charging or the brush roll halts, start with our Shark troubleshooting guide; most issues come down to contacts, blockages or a tired battery.
Common owner-reported issues
The most frequent complaint is the bin size rather than any fault: owners with pets find themselves emptying it more than once per clean. Some report that the sensor-driven boosts noticeably shorten runtime on very dusty floors, which is the system working as designed. As with other Sharks, the brush roll can stop if something jams it, and a dirty filter reduces suction quickly given the compact bin and cyclone. Rinse the filters monthly and check the brush roll ends for threads, and most performance drops disappear. See cordless hoover losing suction for a step-by-step check.
Pros and cons
- Lighter and slimmer than most Shark sticks
- Automatic dirt, edge and floor sensing
- Anti Hair Wrap brush roll; headlights
- Auto-Empty option available
- Small 0.4L bin
- Weaker on deep-pile carpet than heavier Sharks
- No bendable Flexology wand
- No runtime screen
Alternatives to the Shark Detect Pro
- Dyson V12 Detect Slim – lighter still, laser head and screen, but pricier with an even smaller bin.
- Shark PowerDetect – heavier, stronger, bigger bin, up to 70 minutes.
- Shark Anti Hair Wrap IZ202UK – bigger bin and Flexology wand, simpler controls.
- Dyson V8 – similar weight, cheaper, no sensors.

FAQs
Is the Shark Detect Pro good for pet hair?
It handles hair well thanks to the Anti Hair Wrap brush roll, but the small bin fills quickly with fur. The Auto-Empty version, or a larger-bin Shark, is more practical for heavy shedders.
Why does the UK Detect Pro claim 60 minutes when US reviews say 40?
The UK model is listed with a longer claimed runtime than the US version. Either way, the figure is measured in Eco with a non-motorised tool, so real-world floor cleaning runtime is shorter.
Does the Detect Pro bend like other Sharks?
No. It uses a straight wand to save weight. If reaching under furniture without bending matters, look at Flexology models like the Stratos.
Is the Auto-Empty base worth it?
For allergy sufferers and pet homes, often yes, because the small bin otherwise needs frequent emptying. The base takes floor space, so check you have room near a socket.
Is the Detect Pro light enough for older users?
At roughly 2.8kg it's one of Shark's lighter full-size sticks and uses a power button rather than a trigger, which many people find easier. The small bin does mean more frequent emptying, so the Auto-Empty version is worth considering for anyone who struggles with bin release catches.
Does the Detect Pro come with a pet tool?
The standard IW1511UK kit focuses on crevice and dusting tools. Some retailer and pet kits add a motorised tool; check the box contents before buying.
