Shark PowerDetect Cordless Review, Including Clean & Empty
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.
The Shark PowerDetect Cordless is Shark's long-runtime flagship stick, with up to 70 minutes claimed, automatic suction based on dirt, edges and floor type, and a roughly 0.7-litre bin. The Clean & Empty version adds a dock that empties the bin for you. It cleans carpets and pet hair strongly for less than a Dyson V15 or Gen5detect, but it is heavy and the dock takes up floor space.
Quick answer: Buy the PowerDetect if you have a medium-to-large home, pets, and want long runtime without Dyson prices. Choose the Clean & Empty kit if bin-emptying dust bothers you or allergies are an issue. Skip it if you need a light stick for stairs or have no space for a dock – see the Shark Detect Pro or Dyson V12.

Design and handling
The PowerDetect looks and handles like a Stratos: motor pod near the handle, Flexology wand that bends to reach under furniture and lets the hoover stand when folded, and a power button rather than a trigger. At around 3.7kg it's one of the heavier sticks; on floors that's offset by easy steering, but handheld cleaning for long stretches is tiring.
LED indicators show mode and battery level; there's no full runtime screen like Dyson's.
Cleaning performance by floor type
Carpets
The PowerDetect floor head combines Shark's PowerFins-style brush roll with sensors that raise suction when more dirt is detected and adjust for carpet. Independent reviews broadly rank it among Shark's strongest cordless models on carpet and close to Dyson's V11/V15 tier, at a lower typical price.
Hard floors and edges
Edge sensing boosts suction near skirting boards and along walls, where hoovers usually leave a dusty strip. Headlights help on dark floors. It's very good on laminate, wood and tile, though a Dyson laser head reveals more of the finest dust.
Pet hair
The Anti Hair Wrap system on the PowerDetect head performs as well as on other recent Sharks, which is to say very well. The IP1251UKT pet kit adds a motorised pet tool for sofas and stairs. See best cordless hoover for pet hair.
Battery and charging
Shark's up-to-70-minute claim is in Eco with a non-motorised tool, matching Dyson's Gen5detect on paper. With the floor head and sensors active, owners typically see roughly 30–50 minutes depending on how often the sensors boost; in Boost, around 10–15 minutes. That's enough for most three- and four-bedroom homes, and the battery is removable for a spare. On the Clean & Empty kit, the dock charges the hoover while it empties it. Compare runtimes in our long battery life guide.
Bin, filtration and the Clean & Empty dock
The roughly 0.7-litre bin is a decent size for a stick. On the Clean & Empty version, docking the hoover triggers the base to suck the bin contents into its own larger container. Shark says the base holds up to about 45 days of debris, though in a multi-pet house it'll be sooner.
The dock reduces your contact with dust, which matters for allergy sufferers, but it is loud for a few seconds while emptying and needs a spot near a socket. Bagless docks also need their own container emptying and filter cleaning. Our self-emptying cordless hoover guide compares it with Samsung's Clean Station and others.
Filters are washable – rinse monthly and air dry for at least 24 hours.
Warranty and parts
Shark UK lists a five-year guarantee on registration for the Clean & Empty model, with the battery covered for a shorter period (two years at the time of writing). Check the terms for your exact model. Spare batteries and filters are widely available; see Shark troubleshooting for dock and charging issues.
Who should buy the PowerDetect
Bigger homes. The 70-minute claim and removable battery make it one of the more realistic cordless options for whole-house cleaning on one charge. See best cordless hoover for large homes.
Pet owners. Anti Hair Wrap, a pet tool on UKT kits and a decent bin make it well suited to shedding dogs and cats.
Allergy households (Clean & Empty). Automatic emptying reduces exposure to dust clouds when emptying the bin.
Who should skip it: anyone who needs a light hoover for carrying upstairs, small flats without room for a dock, and those who want a runtime display.
Is the Clean & Empty version worth the extra?
It depends on how often you empty the bin and how much you dislike doing it. In a busy pet home, emptying a 0.7-litre bin mid-clean is a daily irritation, and the dock fixes that. In a small, tidy home without pets, the standard stick plus the money saved is the better buy. Bear in mind the dock's footprint: it needs floor space near a socket, usually in a hallway or utility room. Our self-emptying guide compares footprints and running costs of different docks.
Running costs
The bagless dock means no ongoing bag cost, unlike some rivals. Washable filters keep costs low; the main long-term expense is a replacement battery. Electricity for charging is minor, as our running costs guide shows.
Common owner-reported issues
On the stick, owners mostly mention weight and the occasional brush roll stoppage from blockages. On the Clean & Empty kit, the dock is the main source of queries: incomplete emptying when the bin is packed with long hair, the hoover not seating properly on the charging contacts, and the dock's own filter needing a clean. Most of these are fixed by seating the hoover firmly, emptying the bin manually after very heavy cleans and keeping the dock filter clear. Our Shark troubleshooting guide covers Clean & Empty base issues step by step.
Pros and cons

- Strong carpet and pet hair performance
- Edge and dirt sensing reduce mode-switching
- Clean & Empty dock cuts dusty bin-emptying
- Heavy at around 3.7kg

- Clean & Empty kit adds significant cost
Alternatives to the Shark PowerDetect
- Shark Stratos – similar cleaning, odour neutraliser, often cheaper.
- Dyson Gen5detect – power button, laser head, sealed HEPA; much pricier.
- Samsung Bespoke Jet – rival auto-empty Clean Station.
- Shark Detect Pro – lighter with a smaller bin.

FAQs
What's the difference between PowerDetect and PowerDetect Clean & Empty?
The stick hoover is essentially the same. Clean & Empty adds a charging dock that automatically empties the bin into a larger container each time you dock it.
Does the Clean & Empty dock need bags?
Shark's PowerDetect Clean & Empty base is bagless, so there are no bags to buy, but you'll need to empty its container and clean its filter occasionally.
Can I buy the dock separately later?
Don't count on it. Docks are designed around specific kits, and buying the Clean & Empty bundle up front is normally the simpler and cheaper route. If you already own the IP1251UK, check Shark's parts store for compatibility before assuming an upgrade path.
Is 70 minutes realistic?
Only in Eco with a non-motorised tool. With the powered floor head on carpet, expect much less – still among the longest-running cordless sticks.
