The Best Dyson Cordless Hoover to Buy (2026)

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

The best Dyson cordless hoover for most UK buyers in 2026 is the V15 Detect: now that newer flagships have arrived, it is regularly discounted, yet it still has the laser head, dust sensor and big bin that make Dysons worth the money. Smaller homes should buy the lighter V12 Detect Slim, and buyers on a budget get most of the essentials from the V11 or V8.

Runtime figures are Dyson's claims in the lowest mode with a non-motorised tool; expect far less on boost or with the main floor head on carpet. Price bands cover typical UK retail and sale prices in 2026. Dyson bundles (Absolute, Advanced, Origin, Fluffy) change what's in the box, so compare tools as well as prices. Our Dyson cordless hoover guide explains the naming.

Best Dyson for most homes

Dyson V15 Detect

The V15 Detect remains the sweet spot. You get the green laser that reveals dust on hard floors, a piezo sensor that counts particles and adjusts power in auto mode, an LCD screen showing remaining runtime, and a bin large enough for family homes. Its Digital Motorbar head resists hair wrap, and the Hair Screw tool helps on pet beds and stairs.

Since the Gen5detect and V16 launched, the V15 is frequently discounted, which makes it the best value among Dyson's laser models. It is heavier than the V12 at around 3kg. See our Dyson V15 Detect review, V12 vs V15 and V15 vs Gen5detect.

  • Laser and dust sensor
  • Large bin for a stick
  • Often discounted
  • Around 3kg; tiring overhead
  • Hold-to-run trigger

Best for smaller homes

Dyson V12 Detect Slim

The V12 gives you Dyson's laser and sensor in a lighter, slimmer body of around 2.2kg. It is ideal for flats and homes with mostly hard floors, and it's the easiest Dyson to grab for quick cleans. Our V12 Detect Slim review has full details.

The bin is smaller and the floor head smaller too, so it is less suited to big carpeted homes or shedding pets. See also our best for small flats.

  • Light and agile
  • Laser and sensor
  • Small bin
  • Less suited to thick carpets

Best value for larger homes

Dyson V11

The V11 offers the same bin size as the V15 and similar real-world cleaning on carpet, but without the laser and particle sensor. Some versions include auto mode and an LCD runtime screen. For a carpeted family home, it's the most cost-effective large Dyson.

It is as heavy as the V15. If your floors are mostly hard, the laser on the V12 or V15 is worth paying for. Read our Dyson V11 review and V11 vs V15.

  • Big bin, strong carpet cleaning
  • Good value
  • No laser or sensor
  • Heavy

Cheapest worth buying

Dyson V8

The V8 is Dyson's entry point, still sold in versions such as the V8 Advanced and V8 Absolute, and a 2025 refresh branded V8 Cyclone appears at some retailers. It is light, proven and excellent as a handheld, with a smaller bin and shorter runtime suited to flats and smaller houses.

The V8's battery is not as easy to swap as newer Dysons'. At the same price, Shark's Anti Hair Wrap often cleans carpet better. See our Dyson V8 review and V8 vs V11.

  • Lowest-priced current Dyson
  • Light, great handheld
  • Short runtime
  • Small bin

Best filtration

Dyson Gen5detect

The Gen5detect brought a stronger motor, HEPA filtration across the whole machine, a power button instead of a trigger, and a longer runtime claim. It is a good choice for allergy sufferers and large homes, and its button is easier on the hands.

It is heavy and expensive, and the V16 now sits above it. Buy it when it's discounted. Read our Gen5detect review and our allergy picks.

  • Whole-machine HEPA
  • Power button
  • Long runtime
  • Heavy
  • Expensive

Flagship

Dyson V16 Piston Animal

Launched in 2025, the V16 Piston Animal is Dyson's top stick, with a new motor, a removable battery with a runtime claim of up to around 70 minutes, and a redesigned bin that compresses debris. Some bundles include a Submarine wet roller head, and Dyson has announced a self-emptying dock for it.

It is the best-performing Dyson on paper, but the premium over a discounted V15 is large for most homes. Check our Dyson sale guide for when prices dip.

  • Most powerful Dyson stick
  • Large compressing bin
  • Removable battery
  • Very expensive
  • Heavy

Hard-floor specialist

Dyson PencilVac

The PencilVac is a very slim stick with the motor inside a narrow handle and anti-tangle cone brushes. It is light and stores anywhere, but the tiny bin and hard-floor focus make it a niche choice. Buy it for a minimalist hard-floored flat, not as a family hoover.

  • Ultra-slim and light
  • Anti-tangle cones
  • Tiny bin
  • Not for carpets

How we ranked the Dysons

We don't test hoovers in a lab. Our ranking reflects manufacturer specs, independent UK lab and consumer test consensus, owner-reported reliability, parts and battery availability, and UK price history. We ranked on value: the cleaning and features you get for the price you can typically pay, not list price. That's why the V15 ranks above newer flagships.

  • Cleaning on mixed UK floors, carpet and hard floor.
  • Features that matter day to day: laser, auto mode, bin size, removable battery.
  • Weight and ergonomics.
  • Typical discounted price, not RRP.

Buying advice for Dyson

Check the bundle name

Absolute bundles usually include extra heads, such as the Fluffy hard-floor roller, while Advanced, Origin and retailer-exclusive bundles strip some out. Comparing on the model number alone can mislead.

Refurbished and older models

Dyson's outlet and authorised refurbished units can offer good value with a warranty. The V10 has been discontinued in the UK but is common refurbished. Read our refurbished cordless hoover guide before buying used.

Dyson vs rivals

Shark often beats Dyson on value, especially on carpet and pet hair. See Shark vs Dyson and our overall best cordless hoover pillar.

Dyson features explained

  • Laser (green light). Lights up dust on hard floors so you can see what you've missed. Very useful on hard floors, irrelevant on carpet.
  • Piezo sensor and auto mode. Counts and sizes particles, shown on the LCD, and ramps suction up or down. Saves battery and noise.
  • Hair Screw tool. A small conical brush that pushes hair off the end rather than wrapping it. Great on pet beds and stairs.
  • Click-in battery. On V11 and later, the battery clicks out, so you can buy a spare or replace it easily. See our battery replacement guide.
  • Fluffy head. A soft roller for hard floors, included in many Absolute bundles.

Not every feature is worth paying for. If your home is mostly carpet, the laser adds little, and a V11 can clean as well as a V15 for less money.

FAQs

Which Dyson is best for pet hair?

The V15 Detect is the best value for pet homes thanks to its large bin, anti-tangle head and Hair Screw tool. The V16 Piston Animal is stronger still but much pricier.

Is the Dyson V8 still worth buying in 2026?

For small homes on a budget, yes, especially when discounted. Its runtime and bin are limited, so larger homes should look at the V11.

Do Dyson batteries come out?

On most current models from the V11 onwards, the battery clicks out and can be swapped or replaced easily. Older models such as the V8 need a screwdriver.

When is the best time to buy a Dyson?

Big discounts typically appear around Black Friday, January sales and Amazon Prime Day, and when a newer model launches. See our guide to the best time to buy.

Is the Dyson V16 worth it over the V15?

For most homes, no. The V16 is stronger with a bigger bin and longer runtime claim, but a discounted V15 Detect covers the same everyday jobs well for far less. The V16 makes more sense for large, pet-heavy homes with a bigger budget.
