Bosch vs Dyson Cordless Hoover: Which Should You Buy?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

Dyson cleans carpets better and has bigger bins, so it remains the safer buy for pet owners and carpet-heavy homes. Bosch's Unlimited range wins on batteries: the 18V packs click out, are shared with Bosch's green garden and DIY tools, and the Unlimited 10 claims longer runtimes than any single-battery Dyson.

Quick answer: Pick Dyson (V11 or V15 Detect) for the strongest carpet cleaning, larger bins and the widest tool range. Pick Bosch Unlimited if you already own Bosch 18V tools, want swappable batteries and long runtimes, or mostly have hard floors.

How the ranges line up

Bosch sells two main cordless stick families in the UK: the Unlimited 7 and the newer, more powerful Unlimited 10, with ProAnimal, ProPower and similar variants that change the kit and battery size. Dyson's range runs from the V8 up through the V11, V12 Detect Slim and V15 Detect to the Gen5detect. The fair matches are Unlimited 7 against the V8 and V11, and Unlimited 10 against the V15 Detect.

Suction and cleaning

Dyson is ahead on carpet. The V11 (185 AW claimed) and V15 Detect (230 AW claimed) both use torque-sensing motorised heads that adjust to the floor, and independent tests consistently rate them near the top for deep-carpet pick-up. The V15's de-tangling Digital Motorbar head is also better with long hair.

Bosch does not publish air watts. The Unlimited 10 is a big step up from the 7 and holds its own on hard floors and short-pile carpet, with an automatic mode that adjusts suction. Owners and reviewers generally describe it as strong but a notch behind the V15 on thick carpets. For floor-specific picks see best for carpets and best for hard floors.

Battery and runtime

Bosch wins this round decisively. Its batteries are part of the 18V Power for All Alliance, so the same pack fits a Bosch strimmer, drill or hedge trimmer, and packs from other alliance brands will fit too. Spares are easy to find and you can swap mid-clean. The Unlimited 10's claimed 80–100 minutes per battery is among the longest of any single-battery stick.

The V11's battery is screw-fixed and the V15's is click-in, with spares available from Dyson. Real-world runtime with the motorised head on Auto is typically 30–45 minutes for either. If runtime is your priority, also read longest battery life picks.

Bin and filtration

Dyson's 0.76L bins are nearly double Bosch's, which makes a real difference in a family home with pets. Bosch's small bin fills quickly and needs emptying mid-clean in larger homes. Both offer good filtration; Dyson's whole-machine sealing has a strong reputation with allergy sufferers. Read HEPA filters explained for what the labels mean.

Ergonomics

The Unlimited range tends to feel well balanced, and Bosch uses an on/off button rather than a trigger on most models, which is easier on the hand during long sessions. Dyson's V11 and V15 are top-heavy in handheld mode and use a trigger. Both need a wall mount or stand to store neatly.

Tools and parts

Dyson offers the widest choice of tools, many of which fit across generations, plus a large refurbished market. Bosch includes the essentials and pet tools on ProAnimal versions. Both brands sell spare parts in the UK, and Bosch's batteries are especially easy to replace thanks to the shared 18V system.

Price and value

At £220–£380, the Unlimited 7 is good value, especially if you already own Bosch 18V batteries and can buy a "bare" or cheaper bundle. At the top end, the V15 Detect is the better cleaner, but the Unlimited 10 often undercuts it and runs longer. Value depends on what you already own.

A note on Bosch model names: the UK range is sold under a mix of suffixes (ProAnimal, ProPower, Gen2 and others) that change the floorhead, tool kit and battery capacity. Two machines both called "Unlimited 7" can differ noticeably in runtime because one has a larger pack. Always compare the battery capacity in amp-hours (Ah) and the tool list before comparing prices.

Dyson naming is simpler but has its own quirks, with retailer-exclusive variants such as "Absolute", "Total Clean" and colour editions carrying different tools. Our Dyson guide decodes them.

Final recommendation

For carpets, pets and big bins, buy the Dyson V15 Detect, or the V11 if budget is tighter. For long runtimes, swappable batteries and a shared tool system, the Bosch Unlimited 10 is the smarter buy. Read our Unlimited 10 review for more detail.

FAQs

Do Bosch power tool batteries fit the Unlimited hoover?

Bosch's green 18V Home & Garden batteries are designed to fit. The blue professional range uses a different system, so check compatibility before buying a spare.

Is Bosch Unlimited quieter than Dyson?

Bosch sticks are generally described as less shrill than Dysons, but noise depends on mode and floorhead. See our quiet cordless hoover guide if noise matters.

Which is better for a large home?

Bosch for runtime, since you can swap batteries and the Unlimited 10 runs a long time per pack. Dyson for bin size and carpet pick-up. Many large-home owners buy a spare battery for either.

Can I use one Bosch battery for my hoover and garden tools?

Yes, that is the main appeal. A green Bosch 18V pack charged for the Unlimited will also run compatible Bosch garden and DIY tools, and vice versa. Bigger packs give longer runtime but add a little weight to the hoover.

Is the Bosch Unlimited 10 worth it over the Unlimited 7?

For larger homes, usually yes, thanks to its stronger suction and much longer claimed runtime. For a flat, the Unlimited 7 is enough. See our Unlimited 7 review.
