Gtech Multi Plus Review (2026)

The Gtech Multi Plus is a mains-free handheld hoover built for stairs, sofas, cars and spot cleaning, and it is most often bought as the partner to a Gtech AirRAM. It weighs around 1.5kg, offers up to roughly 20 minutes runtime and comes with a generous tool kit, but its small bin and modest runtime mean it is a second hoover, not your only one.

Quick answer: Buy the Multi Plus if you own an upright (especially an AirRAM) and want a proper handheld for stairs, upholstery and the car. The K9 version is worth it for pet owners. Skip it if you want one machine for the whole house; a stick that converts to handheld, such as the Vax Blade 4 or Gtech Pro 2, is better value then.

Gtech's naming varies: "Multi", "Multi Plus", "Multi Mk2" and "Multi K9" are all used, and the difference is mostly in the tools. Check what is in the box against the listing before buying. Prices vary through the year; check the current price.

Design and handling

The Multi is a pistol-grip handheld with the motor and bin in front of the handle. At around 1.5kg it is heavier than tiny car vacs but well balanced, and it feels substantial rather than toy-like. The extension wand lets you reach cobwebs and under radiators, effectively turning it into a mini stick for above-floor jobs.

The tool kit is a strength. A crevice tool gets into car seat gaps and along skirting boards; a brush tool handles shelves and keyboards; the power brush, where included, turns a spinning brush on fabric and carpeted stairs. That makes it better equipped out of the box than many handhelds at the same price.

Cleaning performance by surface

Stairs

This is the Multi's main job. With the power brush, carpeted treads come clean of hair and grit quickly, and the 1.5kg weight is manageable for a full flight. For more on technique, see how to hoover stairs and our best for stairs guide.

Upholstery and pet beds

The power brush helps lift hair from sofas and dog beds. The K9 version is set up specifically for pet hair. Long hair can wind around the brush, so check it regularly.

Cars

The crevice tool and compact body work well in footwells and between seats. The 20-minute runtime is enough for a typical car clean. Compare alternatives in our best car hoover guide.

Floors

You can do small floor areas with the wand, but it is not designed for whole rooms. Pair it with a stick or upright for floors.

Battery and charging

Up to around 20 minutes is fine for stairs, upholstery and the car. With the power brush running, expect less. Charging takes a few hours, so it is worth topping up after each heavy session.

Gtech sells Multi and K9 replacement batteries, which extends the life of the machine. When the runtime drops noticeably after a few years, a replacement battery is usually cheaper than a new handheld. See cordless hoover battery replacement.

Bin, filtration and maintenance

The bin is around 0.4 litres, which is reasonable for a handheld but fills quickly on a shedding dog's bed. Empty it after every major job to keep suction strong. The filter should be cleaned regularly; fine dust from cars and stairs clogs it faster than you might expect.

Our cleaning guide covers bins, filters and brushes. A clogged filter is the most common reason for reduced suction on handhelds.

The bundle with the Gtech AirRAM is often the best value, giving a self-standing upright for floors and the Multi for everything else. Our Gtech guide covers all the options.

Who should buy the Multi Plus?

The Multi Plus is a good fit for three situations. First, AirRAM owners, or anyone with an upright or cylinder hoover, who need a capable handheld for stairs, upholstery and the car. Second, households with pets, where the power brush and the K9 version make light work of hair on sofas and dog beds. Third, people who want a handheld that is more substantial than a basic crumb-catcher, with enough tools to handle above-floor jobs like cobwebs, curtains and radiators.

It is less suitable as a main hoover. If you live in a studio flat with mostly hard floors you might get away with it, but a lightweight stick will be faster and less tiring. If budget is tight and you only need one machine, choose a stick that converts to a handheld instead.

How it compares to stick-in-handheld mode

Most stick hoovers convert to a handheld by removing the wand. In that mode they are often similar in weight to the Multi, but the Multi is designed as a handheld first: the grip, tool storage and balance are better for long stair sessions. Stick handhelds, meanwhile, share the main machine's battery, so stairs eat into floor-cleaning runtime. Having a dedicated handheld avoids that.

Reliability and parts

Gtech sells batteries, filters and tools directly, and the Multi has been on sale in various forms for years, so spares are easy to find. Battery wear is the most common issue after a few years; a replacement battery restores runtime. Keep the filter clean and the bin emptied to reduce strain on the motor. Our losing suction guide covers the common fixes.

Pros and cons

  • Well-equipped tool kit
  • Power brush handles stairs and upholstery
  • Balanced at around 1.5kg
  • Replaceable battery
  • Pairs well with the AirRAM
  • Around 20-minute runtime
  • Small 0.4-litre bin
  • Not a whole-house hoover
  • Confusing Multi/Plus/Mk2 naming

Alternatives worth considering

  • Smaller, lighter handheld: the Shark WandVac is slimmer for quick crumb pick-ups.
  • One machine for everything: a stick that converts to a handheld, such as the Gtech Pro 2.
  • More handheld choices: see our best handheld hoover guide.

FAQs

Is the Gtech Multi Plus bagged or bagless?

The Multi range is bagless. Gtech's bagged handheld is the HyLite, which suits people who want dust-free emptying.

Can I use the Multi to clean floors?

For small areas, such as a bathroom floor or a spill, yes, with the extension wand. For whole rooms, it is too slow and the runtime too short.

Do Multi and Multi K9 batteries fit each other?

Gtech lists a shared Multi/K9 battery, but check compatibility for your exact model on Gtech's site before ordering a spare.

Is the Multi good for a car?

Yes. The crevice tool, compact size and 20-minute runtime suit typical car cleans. For lots of car valeting, see our car hoover guide for alternatives.

How long does the Gtech Multi take to charge?

Expect a few hours for a full charge, depending on the model and battery condition. Charging after each use keeps it ready, and lithium-ion batteries do not need to be fully drained first.

Is the Multi worth buying on its own?

Yes, if you already own a good floor hoover and want a capable handheld for stairs, upholstery and the car. If you need one machine for everything, a stick hoover that converts to a handheld is better value.
