Bissell Cordless Hoovers: Which One Is Worth Buying?

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How this works.

Bissell's best cordless products in the UK aren't its stick vacuums. They are the CrossWave wet and dry floor cleaners and the Pet Hair Eraser handhelds. Its cordless sticks are decent and pet-focused, but at the same money a Shark or a mid-range Dyson usually gives you a better floor head, a longer warranty and easier parts.

Quick answer: If most of your floors are hard and they get muddy paws or spills, a cordless Bissell CrossWave is the reason to buy Bissell. If you want a handheld for pet hair on sofas and stairs, look at the Pet Hair Eraser cordless handhelds. If you need one cordless stick for the whole house, compare Bissell's ICON or MultiReach against a Shark at the same price before buying. The Shark is usually the safer choice.

The Bissell cordless range at a glance

Bissell is an American family-owned brand. It sells fewer cordless models in the UK than in the US, and stock moves between Argos, Currys, AO, Amazon and Bissell's own UK shop. Model names stay the same for years but the four-digit model codes change by region and bundle, so check the code before buying.

LineTypeBest forTypical price band

ICON (25V, pet variants)Cordless stickPet homes with a mix of carpet and hard floor£180–£300
MultiReach (Essential / Active)Budget 2-in-1 stickQuick daily tidy-ups in small homes£80–£180

Prices are typical bands, not live prices. CrossWave models in particular are often discounted around Black Friday and in January. See our cordless hoover sale guide for how to tell a real discount from an inflated "was" price.

How Bissell's range and naming work

Bissell organises its range around jobs rather than one family of sticks with numbered upgrades:

  • CrossWave = wet cleaning. These machines vacuum and wash at the same time using a spinning microfibre/nylon brush roll, a clean-water tank and a dirty-water tank. Cordless versions run on a large battery and dock in a tray that runs a self-cleaning cycle.
  • ICON = Bissell's premium dry cordless stick, with a tangle-resistant brush roll aimed at pet hair.
  • MultiReach = cheaper 2-in-1 sticks where the handheld unit pops out of the stick. Lower voltage, smaller bins.
  • Pet Hair Eraser = pet-focused handhelds with rubber-nubbed or motorised tools for upholstery.

"Pet" in a Bissell name usually means an extra motorised mini tool, a tangle-resistant roller or an odour filter, not a different motor. Compare what's in the box before paying more for the pet version.

Key Bissell tech explained

Wet and dry multi-surface cleaning

A CrossWave does not replace a vacuum on carpet. It can freshen low-pile rugs with the right formula and setting, but it is built for sealed hard floors. What it replaces is the hoover-then-mop routine: a single pass picks up crumbs and dried-on marks, and the dirty water goes into a separate tank instead of being pushed around by a mop. Read our best cordless wet and dry hoover guide to compare it against Tineco, Dreame, Vax and Dyson.

Tangle-free brush rolls

Bissell's tangle-resistant rollers on ICON-type sticks deal well with pet hair. Long human hair is a harder test, and Shark's Anti Hair Wrap and Dyson's conical rollers are more proven. If several people in your home have long hair, read our long-hair picks first.

Self-cleaning trays

Cordless CrossWaves run water through the brush roll while docked to rinse it. This helps, but it doesn't remove the need to empty and rinse the dirty-water tank and dry the brush roll. If you leave dirty water sitting in the machine, it will smell within a day or two. This is true of every wet-dry brand.

Best Bissell overall

Bissell CrossWave Cordless (Max / current generation)

This is the model Bissell does best. On paper it handles both wet and dry mess in one pass on tiles, vinyl and sealed wood, and the two-tank system keeps dirty water away from your floor. It's bulkier and heavier than a dry stick and runs for much less time than a vacuum, so think of it as a kitchen and hallway tool, not a whole-house hoover. For the price, also look at the Tineco Floor One models (see our Tineco guide), which often have better edge cleaning and smarter sensors.

  • Vacuums and washes hard floors in one pass
  • Separate clean/dirty tanks
  • Self-cleaning cycle in the dock
  • Heavy and bulky to store
  • Not a carpet cleaner
  • Needs proper tank rinsing after every use

Best Bissell stick for pets

Bissell ICON 25V (pet variants)

The ICON is Bissell's most capable dry stick. The tangle-resistant roller and pet tools are the selling points, and Bissell quotes runtime of up to around 50 minutes in its lowest mode. That claim is made in eco mode, not with the motorised floor head on boost. It makes sense when it costs noticeably less than a Shark Anti Hair Wrap with Flexology. When the two are priced the same, the Shark usually has the more practical floor head and better parts support.

  • Pet-focused tools and roller
  • Removable battery
  • Often well discounted
  • Less proven on long human hair
  • Spares harder to find than Shark/Dyson

Best Bissell handheld

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser cordless handheld

For the sofa, the dog's bed and the car, a dedicated pet handheld can do more than a stick in handheld mode, because it's light enough to use for ten minutes at a time. The rubber and motorised tools grip embedded hair on fabric well. It won't do floors, so treat it as a second machine. Compare it with others in our best handheld hoover roundup.

  • Light, easy to grab
  • Tools designed for upholstery hair
  • Small bin
  • Short runtime on the motorised tool

Skip if: the cheapest MultiReach models are fine for quick crumb pick-ups in a small flat, but they aren't a main hoover for a family home with carpets. Spend a bit more on a Shark, Vax or Gtech instead (see best cordless hoover under £200).

Reliability, parts and warranty

Bissell's UK guarantee is generally shorter than Shark's (Shark usually offers 2 years plus extra cover when you register). Bissell has offered 2–3 years depending on model and promotion, so check the terms printed on the retailer listing or the box, and register the product when you buy it. Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply on top of any guarantee. Our warranty guide explains how.

Spares are the weak point. Filters, brush rolls and CrossWave cleaning formula are easy to buy from Bissell UK and Amazon. Replacement batteries and chargers for specific models can be harder to find, and stock runs out on older models. The issues owners raise most with wet-dry machines are smells from tanks that weren't rinsed and clogged dirty-water paths. Both are mostly down to maintenance.

Where to buy a Bissell cordless

Argos, Currys, AO, Amazon and Bissell's own UK store all stock the range, with different bundles. Before you buy:

  • Match the full model code, not just "CrossWave Cordless". Bundles differ in tools, number of brush rolls and formula included.
  • For CrossWave models, check the cost of replacement brush rolls and filters. That's your real running cost (see running costs).
  • Prefer retailers with easy returns, because wet-dry machines are a big change in how you clean. See our Argos buying guide for one example.

FAQs

Can I use other cleaning solutions in a Bissell CrossWave?

Bissell recommends its own formula, and other products can foam, leave residue or invalidate the guarantee. Plain warm water works for light cleaning. Never add bleach, vinegar or essential oils to the tank.

Is a Bissell CrossWave good on carpets?

It can refresh rugs and low-pile carpet, but it isn't a carpet washer or a replacement for vacuuming carpet. Most homes with lots of carpet still need a dry cordless or corded hoover.

Is Bissell as good as Shark for pet hair?

For handhelds and wet-dry cleaning it's competitive. For a main cordless stick, Shark's anti-hair-wrap heads are better established and its parts are easier to buy in the UK, so Shark is usually the safer pick at equal prices.

Do Bissell cordless batteries come out?

On the ICON and most current CrossWave Cordless models the battery can be removed. On some budget MultiReach and handheld models it can't, which shortens the machine's useful life. Check the listing before buying.
